Pluto retrograde

Quiet, deep work on what needs to change.

What's happening

Pluto seems to slide backwards for part of each year, a trick of perspective as Earth passes it. Astrologers say it asks you to look at the old patterns and power struggles below the surface.

Making the most of it

Do the quiet inner work and notice what you are ready to let go of.

What it tends to feel like

Big themes go underground. Instead of dramatic change, you may find yourself thinking about power, control and what you need to let go of. It can feel intense but slow.

What to be careful with

Power struggles and trying to force change. Pluto retrograde works best when you look at your own part in a situation rather than trying to control someone else's.

What it is good for

Reflection, therapy, journalling and letting go of habits that no longer help you. It is good for clearing out, emotionally and literally, so you are ready for change when it comes.

How often and how long

Pluto is retrograde about five months of every year. As the slowest planet, it can spend over a decade in one sign, and its retrogrades are a regular part of that long cycle.

Born with Pluto retrograde

Many people are born with Pluto retrograde. It can point to someone who transforms quietly and privately, and who does a lot of inner work before showing change to the world.

Why planets seem to go backwards

Planets never actually reverse. We watch them from Earth, which is also moving, so now and then one appears to slow, stop and drift back across the sky, the way a car you overtake on the motorway seems to slide backwards. Astrologers call this retrograde. They read it as a time to revisit, review and redo rather than push ahead, and the effect is felt most in the house the planet is passing through.
