Which houses matter most?

Strong houses, busy houses and so-called lucky ones

The short version

No house is more important than the rest in every chart. Some houses stand out in yours, usually because they are angular, busy or tied to your Sun, Moon or rising sign. This page explains how to spot them.

Angular houses

The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th sit at the four corners of the chart. Astrologers treat planets there as the most visible and active. If you have planets in these houses, they often show up in how others see you and in the big events of your life.

Busy houses

A house with three or more planets in it gets a lot of attention in your life. People with a crowded house often find that area keeps coming up. Astrologers sometimes call a group like this a stellium. In the app you can see which house is busiest.

Houses tied to your big three

The house your Sun is in shows where you shine. The house your Moon is in shows where you feel safe. Your 1st house is your rising sign. These three tend to matter most for how a chart feels, so start your reading with them.

The house your rising sign's ruler is in

Your rising sign is ruled by a planet, and the house that planet sits in is often a key theme of your life. If Capricorn is rising, for example, Saturn rules your chart, and the house Saturn is in shows where you feel the most driven to build.

Is there a luckiest house?

Some traditions single out the 9th, 5th or 11th as fortunate houses, and older Greek names such as Good Fortune and Good Spirit come from this. That is one way of reading them, not a rule. A house is not lucky or unlucky. What matters is the sign on it and what is inside it.

Is there a weakest house?

Older books called the cadent houses (3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th) weak. Most modern astrologers say quieter. A planet in a quiet house is still part of you, and it often shapes how you think, cope and learn.

Which house is strong in a chart?

A house tends to be called strong when it has planets in it, when it is angular, when its ruler is well placed, or when it holds your Sun or Moon. A house with none of those is quieter, not weaker, and it will come to life when a planet passes through it.

What to do with this

Look for the houses that show up more than once: a house with several planets, or one that holds your Sun, Moon or rising sign. Those are the themes your chart returns to again and again. The rest of the chart fills in the details.
