Mercury retrograde

Mercury is backwards again. Read it twice before you hit send.

Every so often a planet seems to stop and drift backwards across the sky. It isn't really reversing, but astrologers read these stretches as a time to review rather than rush.

How often
About three times a year.
How long
Roughly three weeks each time.
Next
MERCURY is retrograde now, until 15 Nov 2026. The next one is 11 Feb to 5 Mar 2027. Dates are approximate, give or take a day.

What's happening

Mercury looks as if it is moving backwards, which is just Earth overtaking it on the inside lane. Astrologers say it asks you to recheck, reread and rethink before you commit.

Making the most of it

Revisit old plans and finish what you left half done, and save the new contracts for later.

What it tends to feel like

Messages go astray, plans need redoing and people from the past get back in touch. Trains run late, files will not open and you say the wrong name in a meeting. None of it is a disaster. It is just a stretch where small slips are more likely, so it pays to slow down and check.

The shadow period

Astrologers also talk about the shadow: roughly two weeks before Mercury turns back and two weeks after it turns forward again, while it crosses the same part of the sky. The first shadow is when issues start to appear. The last one is when you tidy them up. The retrograde itself is the middle.

What to be careful with

Signing contracts in a hurry, buying new tech, sending something you have not reread, and making big decisions on half the facts. If you have to do any of these, which most people do, just read things twice and keep the receipts.

What it is good for

Anything with re in front of it: revising, reviewing, rewriting, reconnecting and repairing. It is a good time to finish what you left half done, go back over a draft, clear your inbox, back up your phone and get in touch with someone you lost track of.

Born with Mercury retrograde

If Mercury was retrograde when you were born, which is true for a fair number of people, you may think things through on your own before you say them, and come back to ideas others have moved on from. It is not a fault in your chart. It is a style of thinking that tends to go deep rather than fast.

Is it really to blame?

Mercury retrograde gets blamed for everything. The fair version is that it is a reminder to take more care with communication and plans. Things still go wrong when Mercury is moving forward, and plenty goes right while it is retrograde.

Why planets seem to go backwards

Planets never actually reverse. We watch them from Earth, which is also moving, so now and then one appears to slow, stop and drift back across the sky, the way a car you overtake on the motorway seems to slide backwards. Astrologers call this retrograde. They read it as a time to revisit, review and redo rather than push ahead, and the effect is felt most in the house the planet is passing through.
